before and after: kitchen

Diana Vreeland called red the "great clarifier."  She said red is "bright and revealing..I can't imagine being bored with red.  It would be like becoming bored with the person you love!"

She was right.

It's funny.  If you ask ICDC, even to this day, what her favorite color is, the answer you're likely to receive is blue.  Sometimes Kelly green.  But usually blue.

Interestingly enough, ICDC walked through her apartment the other day and found a theme of...red.

Red monogrammed Euro shams.

Red silk lampshades.

Red tape connecting the living room blinds.

Red zebra print throw pillows.

Red themed rugs.

Red chinoiserie lanterns.

So, it only makes sense that a transformation like the one below would end up, well, red.

When she moved in, ICDC's kitchen started out claustrophobic and cluttered.  With a little handywork, ICDC and her very own Mr. Big turned it into something slightly more appealing.

After a great deal more effort, it's finally the kitchen ICDC always wanted (well as much as a one-wall kitchen in a small apartment could be!).

See the transformation for yourself!

Major changes: new appliances (thanks, Mom & Dad!), new floor, new hardware, new high-gloss paint job, removal of excess cabinets and countertops and a new wine cellar unit.

Biggest improvement of all?  Getting rid of the top level cabinets that made you feel as if you could be  swallowed into a sinkhole while making dinner.  It's now much more open and light - and a pleasant place to be!  What's also fantastic is that the red differentiates the kitchen from the dining room next door.

All together, the changes make the space distinguished and it feels SO MUCH BIGGER!  Hooray!

What updates have you made to your own kitchen?

fleas, please!

This weekend, the DC Big Flea Market is back again in Chantilly, Virginia.  And in other flea market news, it appears that a second flea market is coming to Georgetown  - starting this weekend.

On May 4th, the organizers of the Dupont Outdoor Market are starting a new market in the parking lot behind the Old Stone House (across from the Nike Store on M Street).

So, all you District bargain-hunters, you'll have three markets to choose from this coming weekend!

elle decor's "lessons in diplomacy"

In the May issue, Elle Decor features Washington's own Nestor Santa-Cruz, who designed an apartment on U Street for an American businessman returning from London.  It's a fantastic piece that shows how even in trendier parts of town and more industrial-style spaces, treasured antiques can blend with more modern pieces to create elegant rooms.

Santa-Cruz left the exposed ductwork but covered the too-dark cherry floors with sisal rugs and refinished the kitchen cabinets in a black lacquer (not pictured, unfortunately).

Enjoy!

district of chic: jeff akseizer and jamie brown

Jeff Akseizer and Jamie Brown, of the Akseizer Design Group, are an innovative duo who aim to "create great function and pair it with outstanding form."  ADG has it's own millwork factory in Pennsylvania where they produce custom case goods.

This year, the team designed the airy, light and modern loft/media room in the DC Design House. The room has four built in screens for viewing television and/or computer screens..a feast for the eyes!  It's gray grasscloth wallcovering doesn't compete with one's viewing pleasure and yet is fantastically sleek and stunning.

There is a bar behind the sofa (very important!) and the most luxurious and color-saturated built-in fish tank ICDC has ever seen.  What a cool pad!

Other Akseizer Group projects include chic lounges and living areas:

snuggle up in style

On this chilly morning, ICDC thought a post on building indoor "forts" or "teepees" was very appropriate.

You can buy one of these kits..

..or get creative.  All you need: a few clothespins, a sheet or two, some twine and lots of pillows.  A string of lights adds an element of magic.

They can be as make-shift or decorated as you want, and can even include small sofas and chairs. Snuggle up!
